FUNGAL INFECTION
NAIL FUNGUS INFECTIONS
Nail fungus is a condition very commonly seen within my practice.
It is an infection of the nails caused by pathogenic fungal species. These are usually dermatophytes or yeasts.
Factors contributing to infection:
- hormonal disorders (e.g. hypothyroidism)
- circulatory disorders
- immune system disorders
- gastrointestinal disorders
- treatment with cytostatics (anti-cancer drugs)
- treatment with steroids
- softening due to hyperhidrosis
- infections after mechanical damage
- improper foot hygiene
- unsuitable footwear
- dry skin on the feet
- improper trimming of the nails
- warm, humid environment
Nail fungus is a long-term disease and requires patience during treatment. Nails with nail fungus become thickened, excessively calloused, brittle and scarred. They turn yellow-brown and begin to detach from the nail bed.
During the visit, the affected nail plate is cleaned and a suitable chemical preparation is applied to destroy fungi and spores. The patient must continue the treatment at home as advised by a specialist.
During the visit, the patient is informed about prevention, proper care and
recommendations to speed up the healing process and prevent re-infection. The frequency of the treatments is determined individually.
